In my 2000 manual, the photo shows a rounded pin where you place the jack for the front wheels. The yoke on the jack would cradle the pin, as it would the rear axle housing.

My truck has what you see in the photo, instead of a pin. Am I missing something, or do you just place the yoke on the jack up inside the channel ?? ---- John

When I jack up the f/e of my 2000 4x4 I put the floor jack under the lower control arm, raise the truck & then place a jack stand under the rear torsion bar mount. If I am jacking it from the rear I put the floor jack under the rear differential pumpkin & place the jack stands under the axle tubes.

BUT... If you jack the truck up using the Pumpkin, there is a possibility of cracking the welds on the Axle Tube / Pumpkin; that will in turn allow the Tube to wiggle out.

I have heard that about lifting at the differential but I have never seen it happen. I rarely lift the rear.

Most of the time it is lifted on the front or on the side. I have found the balance point on the frame for lifting the side so I can slide a jack stand under so I can rotate the tires.

I have been around automobiles for 45 years including 24 years in the automobile business, & never heard that. I have lifted cars & trucks that way for many years & never had a problem. Not saying it can not happen, never experienced it myself.

Just an opinion, when you lift on the Pumpkin, all the weight of the truck is applied to the outer ends of the Housing Tubes, more weight than they were designed to hold.
Will this crack the weld and loosen the Tubes, only seen one leaking at the Housing / Tube insertion point and didn't know for sure why but was told it was because the truck was lifted at the pumpkin.  How many times, who knows for sure, the owner never said if he did or didn't lift the vehicle that way, or was it a mechanic... !?!

I'm a pumpkin lifter on rangers. Too light in the back IMO to cause any damage.
