I have noticed in the last few days on dry pavement when going slow either almost at a stop, or in a parking lot when coming to a stop the ABS kicks in. I checked it for codes when it first happened & there were no ABS codes & no ABS light. I have not noticed when it happens if the ABS light comes on. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?.

I haven't seen the pickup wheel is it like a disk with slots or more like a cog with teeth?

Thinking about it like was said a sensor could be the issue especially if it is intermittent and would not throw a code unless it went out altogether.

Front or back or you can't tell, kind of all 4's?

I have the 4WABS, I did not know you could tell which is causing it when the ABS system kicks on. Well I did not know if anyone experienced this, figured I would ask. As of know it will have to wait until Spring time, to darn cold to work on it.

Very interesting....

When i was out on a trip a couple of weeks ago, i was in a gas station and almost stopped, used the brakes and it tried to lock up for a second.

It was as if i stamped on the pedal really quickly, my Wife thought i was an idiot. I might be, but i certainly didn't do that to the brakes...

I've seen this before and it is usually caused by a sensor that won't pick up a speed change until like 5 mph. Some times it's the sensor sometimes it's dirty.

What happens is one side of the vehicle sees like 3 mph when slowing down when the other sensor sees 0 mph. The sensor that shows 0 will start to show the correct speed once it goes fast enough and that is why you don't see a code.

There should be PIDs in Forscan for all 3 sensors (FR, FL, and rear) pull them up and slowly come to a stop and slowly accelerate. I bet you will see some drops in the signal.

Forscan is sliced bread. Forscan does more than just about any scan tool except for IDS.
And it is free. And if you own ANY ford vehicle and work on it yourself you should already know about it. Especially if you are a member of F-R. Download it, get a bluetooth OBD2 plug and go to town!

Just an FYI. I have had the ABS sensor load up with metal shavings and give false signals. I had to wipe the shavings off the sensors every time I rotated the tires or it would kick in at low speeds and sometimes put out a false ABS error.

Shavings from the rotor or the sensor?

This is mine and it is fantastic and cheap. I have a couple apps on my phone too for the little stuff.

BAFX OBD2 BT

You do need a windows laptop, I had to create one for my forscan because I don't normally use windows. Of course the laptop I chose did not have native bluetooth so I bought this also cheap:

Wavelink Nano

Which works AWESOME and I can quickly share files between my phone and laptop without a cable. Bonus!!!

I'm betting rotor, especially if the sensor is magnetic and not a proximity sensor. I'm pretty sure the sensors are old school magnetic.

It was the rotor and the sensors were magnetic pickups. It was the early days of ABS.

Can not do that I do not have a smart phone. I have a "old school" scan tool. When I checked it for codes, there were none.

OK everyone, here is a update. I hooked up my OTC Genisys scanner & checked the speed readings when starting from a stop & coming to a stop, & it looks like the r/s front ABS speed sensor is slow to respond. So I tried to replace the ABS speed sensor & the sensor is larger the the hole in the hub & bearing assembly. I ended up damaging the sensor so I just went a head & replaced the r/s hub & bearing assembly (my truck has 149K) which came with a new sensor & it fixed the problem. Thanks to everyone who responded to try to help me out & to sheltonfilms you were correct with the cause.

That is what I did but I was getting tired of looking at the yellow ABS light.
