My 2001 Ranger is parked in front of my house with the fuel pump shorted out, old news been there for 2 months.

Today I was taking the green 2000 north on the highway.. was going 70 then lost power... 60... 50... none of the gauges lit up. I get to the exit and I actually felt extreme spark knock through the gas pedal. The gauge went up a little but came back down. By the time I was able to safely get off the road it was obvious it was overheating.

The gauge did not go up while I was driving or I would have seen it and pulled over. By the time I had spark knock it was too late.

I went back up later popped the hood and saw this:

So being about a half hour away from home I went to a local Lowes, bought pliers I already owned 10 of, bought a screwdriver I own at least 30 of, clamps and a fitting then went back to the truck. Ended up with this:

Fired it up, put coolant in and made it home on 4 maybe 5 cylinders with coolant blowing out the tail pipe.

I've been driving like 45 years, have had every problem that can be had but doesn't the heat gauge usually go up when it is overheating? Perfectly good truck and now the head gasket is blown. The heads are probably warped and/or cracked.

It isn't even considered my car since I gave it to my son over a year ago. Title still in my name but it is his. Or was LOL.

Jim, I had a similar problem with my 2000 Ranger. When we moved from NJ to Virginia 2 1/2 years ago, we drove the Ranger from NJ to Virginia then a day later back to NJ. 3 days later the mover picked up our stuff & we drive it back to Virginia. I drove it to & from work 7.5 miles each way for probably 5 months & come home one day & it is leaking out coolant from the back of the motor. I check the level in the radiator & cannot see any coolant, but the temp gauge never moved. It was still registering in the normal range where it usually read. If you need any parts for your Ranger my 00 is being parted out. Drop me a PM if you want any parts from it.

My 2003 did the same thing.  Empty radiator and the gauge never moved past the normal range.  I'm beginning to think the temp gauge works like the oil pressure... just a "feel good" gauge to look at.
