Most people don't do this well most men, but I have a tendency to attach a name to the vehicles I drive. I haven't done this forever I think it has been since the 3rd wife. Her 2017 CRV is Optimus (due to all the automated features). 1 previous civic was Elsa  from the frozen movie and I forgot what her first civic was but it had a name.

My 2000 2WD in the middle of a seemingly never ending V8 conversion is "Gherkin", my DD 2000 4WD picked up G2, The white 98 is simply Whitey and the recent red one I just sole was "Redrum"

Why?

Well it all started with my 02 dodge ram. I had my youngest son with me, he was about 5 or 6. There was a traffic jam in the parking lot of a dairy queen. I playfully said "I'm about ready to throw it in 4 wheel and go over the sidewalk" He said "you can't do that" I said "yes we can, we have a Big 'ol tough truck" in a southern accent.

Silence. He looks at me with a confused face and says "Pickle tough truck?"

So from then on the dodge was "Pickle Tough".

The first 2000 I dragged home for the V8 project was substantially smaller AND it was green. It became "Gherkin"

Since the next one I bought was similar to Gherkin, except 4WD and extended cab, it was simply Gherkin2 or G2 for short.

Whitey is self explanatory and I will be labeled a racist by the left.

"Redrum" was simply a slurred "Red one" though my wife named it Clifford.

Anyone else brave enough to post in this thread? LOL.

Lol - I never named my first cars but the MGB I bought in 1977 became the "Beast" after I fitted the V8 to it. Then another MGB GT was "Glug" because its registration was GLG and my golden jubilee GT is known as "Digger" because its registration is JCB. The little Austin Healey Sprite is simply "Kar" after its reg. None of the others have names - just "the van", "the lorry" and the "75".

The technical term is anthropomorphism...the assignment of human traits or attributes to innate objects...particularly machines. Mine are typically girl names and start with K. My Ranger is Kari...short for Karizona...attributed to where I found (and rescued) her.

I'd assume we name them because we as humans want to feel some sort of a connection...? Like 1qaz said, mine have been girl names as well.

My old 99 Chevy suburban was named "Big Bertha" (she was huge. Seriously.)

My old 1986 Jeep Cherokee was named Barbarah (new owner still calls her that)

As for my current truck, I still have no name. I want it to be the right one, lol. Taking any suggestions.

Special vehicles get a name or designation;
1978 F-100 LTD 4X4 w/ factory lift was "444" because it had a 400m engine, 4 barrel carb, and granny gear 4 speed.
1979 Harly Sportster was "woman tamer", a half hour ride with a girl on the back she would have her eyes rolled back in her head most of the ride.
1982 MonteCarlo SS was the "Monteshitlo" because it was a first year computer on a wimpy 350 (165hp).
1996 Volvo 850 was "Bob". My daughter named it.
*2011 Volvo C30 is "Jack Flash"
*1996 Harley 1200S is "The Sporty" and the 2006 *ElectraGlide is "Sunglow".
*1974 Stingray is "Sheri II"

I have had many other vehicles that just didn't make the cut to be named. The ones with the "*" are current vehicles.

I usually only name cars to differentiate them in discussion. Black truck, red truck, big truck, gold car   like that.

My dad had a habit of name rigs. So my lightning is Black Betty. I had a silver F150 that Silver Bullet.

Also, if I have a car thats a particular pain in the ass it might get a name

I like to name things as well, for some reason. Never figured out why.

My '99 is named 'Gold Dust'. Fairly obvious why. I tend to like more aggressive sounding names, but there are exceptions.

I named my HD AR-15, a Windham Weaponry AR15A4, "Wendy". Wendy, short for Windham. I named my M1 Garand "Christine", not only because it's a name used popularly around the time period it was made (44), but because it reminds me of that one classic red car that could fix itself, which had the same name. Stephen King.

My other 20" AR15 got named "Project Vietnam" less to give it a name in the first place, but so I could call the project something and still have people know what I was talking about before it was complete. I haven't managed to come up with a name for any of my other guns that have 'stuck'. More often than not I say "The Beretta" or "My 1911", because as of right now I only have one Beretta and only one 1911. No need to make a distinction. That'll change later, of course....

I have never assigned a name to any of my own vehicles however they do earn nick names just because so many dang trucks come through this place.
Crushey, smashey, rolley, and flippey occur often around here so you know which truck we are talking about when talking about the parts donors that are on their way to the recycler, or "flippey" would be a for a flip truck one we plan to fix and sell. My Bronco is the "bronco" my wifes FJ cruiser is the " the J", the Excursion is the "ex" and so on... Our machines do have names though our Polaris Ranger is the "6" the Polaris Rzr 4 seater is the "4" and so on....not very creative now that I type it out but it works around here for us :)

I do name some of my tools for whatever reason, our big dewalt impact gun has earned the name "Hank" somehow even though it started out as Thor...humans are weird, or bored Ill go with bored!!

I've never had a vehicle name that stuck,I seemed to call them Bertha or Big Bertha. Same goes for my guns,I've had a few 44 mags and a T/C Contender pistol which most of the barrels on it have been 14" and most have had scopes. I've even got 1 in 35 rem that kicks like a mule but over the years it doesn't phase me anymore. We do differentiate so we know which trucks we're talking about but since my wife got her truck it could get confusing but only has once so far. I've got a '94 F150 we call the tan truck and the '94 Ranger we call the black truck. Well my wife's truck is a black Ranger too but it's referred as her truck and mine is still called the black truck.

I haven't named my Ranger yet, probably because nothing has come to mind. I have only named a few cars that I've owned out of the many.

Current GTI is Angry Panda. A lot of people with White cars and black accents go with the "storm trooper" theme, I wanted to be different. Plus I like Pandas, they're funny animals.

Previous car a 2004 Jetta GLI I had for 10 years was Macy. Reason I picked that name was because when I first got the car and started taking pics, I used to take my car to the mall upstairs parking level in front of....Macy's lol.

Then there was my 1978 Rabbit that I never should have sold and I still kick myself to this day about it :(. She was Roxy. No reason other then it seemed to fit.

I nicknamed mine "Snowball" for a couple of reasons, one being that it's white obviously, lol.

The other reason is every damn time I start fixing something or start a mechanical project on it, it always, without fail...snowballs on me!!  :P

The Road Warrior was what me and some others called my ranger. It got that name because i always had 5 chainsaws, 4 axes, chains, every tool to work on anything mechanical, and various times I've had to stop on the road put a clutch line back on, retighten an a-arm, or adjust the rear air shocks. I like my f150 but when get another truck its going to be a 98 ranger or a 73 f100 done my way.

I'm here too...  !

Usually I reference my vehicles as "Females" ... She, Her, Slut, Mother F... r, but names just don't happen, I called a '50 Merc I had "Apache", don't ask why, and my first Stand, a '67 GT, was Copper because of her coloring - '69 Dodge Copper Metallic, my '88 STX Ranger 4x4, was just "The Little Truck", and my latest truck for the last ten years she is just "Little Red".

Names evade me most of the time, so it is easier just to look at the vehicles and say Oh ya, that one's... !

my first ranger was a light blue 2wd supercab 2.3, named it the "88 spl" it was a 1988 and at the time i worked at a boat dealership and there was a non-oil injected eveinrude outboard called the 88 spl, almost the same light blue.

ranger 2 was "the green machine". 4x4, 4.0, supercab. loved that truck, had it 14 years i think. hands down my favorite vehicle ive ever owned. it was flat used up when i retired it. https://www.therangerstation.com/forums/index.php?threads/the-green-machine-93-4-0-4x4.148057/

ranger 3 was a 92 2.3 reg cab longbed. "the polar express" cream puff, one owner but it spent the 6 years before i got it parked in a unheated garage. it was white with gold lower two-tone, had a mural of polar bears on the tailgate. uneven compression, milage wasnt much better than my 4.0 4x4. i had it 2 years and someone stole it, probly for body parts, it was pristine.

ranger 4 was "the silver bullet" was supposed to be a V8 project build. silver reg cab 2wd longbed. 3.0 automatic. no 1st gear, had to start in 2nd then shift to drive above 30 mph. after the 92 was stolen the silver ranger was all i had. bed was off of it and i was goofing off in a field trying to do powerslides. somehow it got a grip on the dirt and rolled over. was still running even though it was upside down. at least i only paid 500 for it.

ranger 5. (current truck) reg cab 2.3 longbed 2wd. was a real junkyard dog. i was in need of wheels after the 92 was stolen and i rolled the silver truck (all in the same week!) this truck was in bad shape but i needed wheels, it ran and i knew i could fix whatever it needed. it has become kind of a 70s tribute truck. ive also called it the "johnny cash edition" (after that song "one peice at a time") my girlfriend named it the "blue streak", and after a rear axle change to 4.10s it is quite peppy. in my making it a "70s tribute" ive given it the model name "R-140" (its on the fender near where the ranger emblem used to be) i really cant decide what to call it, so many names fit. mostly i call it the blue streak, as thats what it was first labeled as. ive got a whole flickr photo alblum of the "build" (or rebuild you could say) and i also ended up with a longbed ranger trailer. my inital cost of the '94 chassis was 700......for something that really wasnt worth 500 when i first got it. but its in much better shape now.

Guess I will add to this.
My Ranger is Tonto. All of my buddies call it that, and it stuck. My ex boyfriend came up with it. Tonto was in Lone Ranger. He was the Native American. I loved it. Because most people name their trucks after girls, but my truck, being 4 cylinder, had no power. No balls. So I called it a dude's name. But I have a big pair of pink truck nuts that hang from the hitch.

My Yamaha YZ85 is Lil' Blue.

My TRX450R Race quad was "Sith". Star Wars nerd right here, and it was also deemed POS and SOB because I rebuilt it twice and it still never ran right. Screw you bad wiring harnesses!!

My boyfriend's Mustang I call it "Bae-Stang" or "Fu-Stang". Just kind of stuck.

My mom's Chevy Aveo was deemed "Shitbox". Name explains those cheap Korean-made cars.

My dad's Dodge 3500 Dually is "Bertha" cuz she got a fat asss.

And finally, my mom's old 93 F250 351w 4x4, which was wrapped purple, 4" lift and 35s, was called "The Beast". I miss this truck, I sold it for her on Facebook, and every inch of me wishes I could have had the 4k she wanted for it. I loved that thing. It ran good. Slow because the axles needed re-gearing, but AC worked. I learned how to hotwire a truck with that truck when it was having ignition system issues. I also learned how to replace a distributor and an ignition pickup coil in that truck. Learned a lot. I have many pictures of me sitting in the engine bay to work on it. 5'2". I was eye-to-eye with the headlights.

Pics of The Beast:
