Well, I should have probably made one of these from day one to A. document my progress, and B. help any future (or current) members with anything I do. Better late then never I guess lol. I appreciate so far the answers to my questions I have had. I bought this Ranger a few weeks ago, Oct 19th to be exact. Found it on Craigslist, an older gentleman was selling it as it was his wife's vehicle who had passed the year prior. Its a 2001 XLT single cab 2.3L 5spd 2wd step side. I got it with just under 151K miles on it and he had just had some work done, new shocks and tie rods spark plugs and wires and a fresh oil change. Runs solid

Exterior wise wasn't bad. Normal dings and scratches for a vehicle of this age, they obviously never waxed the vehicle as there was no beading whatsoever and there was a lot of contamination in the paint and the bed had A LOT of paint over spray on the sides, like it was used as a spray booth :squint:. So the first weekend I detailed the exterior. Washed it, then clay bar, then wash again, then used a product from https://kleenfreaksamerica.bigcartel.com/product/rinse-seal as added protection. I then polished and waxed it. Also removed the pin stripes, the lower clear protection film from the lower rocker area as they were rotted and not clear anymore lol. Also removed the dealer sticker from the tailgate. I only had time for the drivers side so I still have to tackle the p/s soon.

Current pic 11/14/2018 dirty, needs a bath, had some snow Monday. The tint was old and scratched up so I removed it all and got the fish bowl going now lol. I'll eventually get new tint done, but it's not very high on the list right now.

Pin stripes and "protection film" still visible on this side

Now some of the major exterior issues are both bumpers are bent and the tailgate is damaged. I did score a mint rear bumper and a hitch at the salvage yard last weekend and I will be installing them this weekend hopefully. I will be ordering a new front bumper with fog light valance as I want to add fog light and I'm ordering Buggman's fog harness as well.

I do not like the drop in bedliner so that will come out and I will do a spray in eventually after I tackle the other important things. Also the spare tire hoist wire has been cut, which is why the spare is in the bed :crazy, but I managed to get another one from the salvage yard and will attempt to install it this weekend along with the rear bumper and hitch.

Interior is completely different story :'(. The previous owners smoked (I don't) and it's very hard to cover up the smell. So this is where most of the initial work will be done. Seats are all tore up and dirty as well as the door panels and lower kick panels.

Drivers side seat belt doesn't retract, cluster has some lights out (gonna get some LED's from Buggman) and is dirty inside. I just noticed some of the vent slates are broken so more trips to the salvage yard lol. I scored some "poverty" door panels (another members term lol) last weekend and kick panels that are in better shape, just need some cleaning and possibly painting. My first trip to the salvage yard I scored some "better" seats out of an Edge, they're dirty, but we have a detail dept here at work that can shampoo them.

My plan is to mod the seat where you cut that "bench" section off the drivers side to make a 40/40 split and install an Explorer center console I scored as well. Some idiot was trying to remove the seats before me and didn't have the proper tools I guess as the brackets on both seats are cut so I am gonna have to swap the brackets from my seats over, I read it's possible just haven't looked into it yet. I also plan to replace the carpet and have the headliner and back cover reupholstered, probably in suede...why not lol. I also snagged a Mustang dome light so that will go in as well with LED's. So far that's it, I will add more content as I get things done though. Any suggestions or helpful hacks is much appreciated.

Nice looking truck, silver is my second favorite color and I hope to own one some day (add to the collection lol).

Find a set of buckets from an extended cab ranger with the console and swap out the rails, I just did one side of my latest which is a single cab also.

I have a how to written but was waiting to do the second side for pictures. First side was learning curve LOL.

A pic of result:

You could also get the buckets & a shorty console from an mid to late 90's Explorer Sport which will bolt right in to a Ranger. The dimples are in the floor where you would drill the holes to mount the shorty console. As another option you could use the buckets & full length console from a 90's Explorer.

He has a short cab, he's going to need the rails from his short cab 60/40's. The rails are actually longer on the short cab go figure.

This is the center console I got. The arm rest is good but it's super dirty, pointless to try and get it cleaned. I'm gonna have it re-upholstered in something less likely to show dirt. I originally got the full length console but realized it wouldn't work with my shifter there lol. For now I'll stick with the seats I already acquired and modify them. The write up I found on another forum was fairly easy and looked good when done. I just need to figure out how to swap my seat rails over to replace the ones that are cut. I believe its just 4 bolts?

Thanks, I would have preferred white to match my GTI but I like silver too. Your seats look good :)

It isn't as easy as 4 bolts.

Here is the text portion, I wrote it to include pics when I do the other side but this is long and explains a lot. I wrote it literally minutes after doing it so if you need me to explain where a picture should be then don't hesitate to ask.

"
This will have new pictures by the time I post it and I read other tutorials...  OF COURSE I came up with a few things different.

This is not the easiest thing on earth to do first of all, plan on it costing you some time.

I started with a 2000 ranger single cab, 60/40 split bench seats.

I got a great deal on a set of buckets from a 2000 extended cab, from black06xlt thank you Adam. I still have a shorty console to hack in also it will be another thread.

The short version, the entire track system has to be removed from your 60/40 split and installed on the ranger bucket seats.

You will need a set of metric sockets and a set of torx sockets. You need 3 different size torx sockets and 2 different size metric sockets, I used impact sockets because seats in a 2000 have been in there for 18 years and an impact wrench makes it so much easier. Even with a heavy duty electric impact there was one seat bolt that did not come out and ended up twisting off. I'm lucky because I work in a machine shop and have an array of drill bits and taps I can recover!

Step 1 is remove the old seats. There will be 4 bolts holding the seat down, one seat belt torx bolt for the center seat belt and one electrical connection that goes to the seat belt. If you jerk the seat out you will destroy the wire or connector and have another project.

The passenger seat is not as wide and has no connections, 4 bolts and it is out.

Turn the old driver seat upside down and recline it to its maximum.

Take a small screwdriver (or about anything that fits in the slot), stick it in the slot on the rounded portion of the plastic recline handle and push the horshoe clip off, I found this easier than trying to pull it from the back as suggested on other sites. Pull the handle outward it should come off the spline easily.

Remove the 4 10MM bolts connecting the track to the seat. There will be a bracket on the back that goes between the 2 bolts.

Lift the tracks slightly from the seat, they cannot be removed yet.

there is a small diameter rod that helps set the recline position, locate where it intersects with the bracket where the seat back pivots. By pulling up slightly on the track you can access the smallest of the 3 sizes of torx bolts you will encounter. The head points toward the outside of the seat both sides. Remove the torx shoulder bolt from the rod.

This differs from what I read, more than one place said there were problems with the seat pivot bolt on the armrest side. I think that's because they were attempting to access it from the "sitting" side of the seat. That works better for the other 3 but for the arm rest side pull the track inward first to get the spline you took the plastic handle off of out of its hole. You should now be able to pull the bracket from the seat back through the bottom enough to access the larger torx bolt FROM THE BOTTOM!. I used an extension but it was easier overall than removing the arm rest. The other pivot bolt just get it from the top, you can pull the cover of the seat back up high enough to access it just fine.

Short of bending the 2 sheet metal tangs holding the cable in you can lift the track out now.

Remove the track from the bucket seat in the same manor except both large torx bolts can be reached from the "top" of the seat."

Thanks Jamman. I thought I read some where in another thread or forum it was just 4 bolts, maybe it was for the older seats :?. Either way I have these and I'm gonna make them work. The ranger I got them out of was a 2002 Edge single cab. I assumed being one year different they would have bolted right in....if the mounting points weren't cut off :crazy, and now I have to swap them regardless. Pics would help me with the explanation, but don't go out of you way. I can always look at the seats and figure it out with your written explanation.

Ok, just an observation. If you have the 60/40 in you truck currently, dont you only need a driver side bucket seat? Cant the passenger side seat from the edge 60/40 be used to replace the driver side seat. I've never tried this but it sounds like itd work. Then you just recover or put matching seat covers with your desired material.

With me.... I don't do seat covers and the seats have to be nice and match LOL. There is my OCD showing.

The buckets are nicer seats than the split. A little higher, lumbar support, way more comfortable. Maybe that's just me.

I actually do have the exact socket needed. It's the same one needed to remove the head bolts on a 1.8T VW motor lol

Probably, I just haven't found any decent buckets in colors I like. I did find a set but they were tan, and I don't want to deal with swapping covers. I like the color of the seats I got so I'll just stick with them. Once they're clean and modified (pretty simple) and once I get the rails swapped they'll look good I think.

Not sure if this is a no no here, but this is the procedure I was referring to with the seat mod from another forum.

But step 3 is a no no you don't have to do that :)

No sawzall needed.

Wait I see what you mean, you are using existing seats. Never mind! The buckets are much nicer and you can get light or dark gray if you have a couple junk yards near you. If you don't this might be your only option.

One of the salvage yards here just got a 03' single cab in so I'm headed there first thing in the AM on Sat, hopefully to get some seat belts and to look at the door cards as well, if better I'll snag those and return the "poverty" ones lol. While there I'll check out the explorers for buckets and sun visors too. If I can find decent buckets I'll go with those and return the 60/40's.

You don't need single cab seats, buckets were not available in single cabs. You have to create them from ex cab buckets.

That's a pretty nifty seat mod.
You can find pretty decent seat covers. These lasted 5 years before the tear. They are leatherette, black with blue panels. I got them online from exact fit for $100. I cant find the site anymore. Probably under a new name

Hijacking thread further...

When I bought the latest green ranger it had seat covers on the 60/40's, until I sat in them and tried to open the arm cover I thought they were the seats!

I don't want them, if anyone has something they want to trade I would send them no problem. I just don't like covers for some reason. These were in 100% perfect shape I did not see a rip anywhere:

Partially removed before I decided it might be a good idea to take pictures.

You could go leather seats like I did if you want.

And +1 on ditching the drop in for a spray in bedliner. I did a spray in liner last year, I have a thread on how I did it somewhere on here. I repainted the bed rail caps while I prepped the bed. Don't mind the sticker I forgot it was there. My toolbox covers it up

Don't like vinyl or leather seats, when you initially get in, you freeze your butt/back in the winter and burn it in the summer lol.

Went to the salvage yard this weekend and came away with some goodies. The Ranger they just got in wasn't touched aside from the D/S window being busted out, (I am assuming because they accidentally locked the key in it when putting it in the yard as the key was in the ignition :crazy) so I had first dibs on everything.

Both seat belts
Jack, tools and cover (my truck had non of this)
Rubber mat (good bye stinky carpet)
kick panels (swapped them out for the previous ones, better condition)
The black trim that holds in the carpet/mat
and the seat belt switch/ashtray pieces (I just have a hole next to the switch :crazy)

I spent way too much time there so I didn't get a chance to install the rear bumper and hitch as I planned. I had to leave to go buy the correct size "torx" bit for the seat belts. No fun having to leave and come back because you don't have the correct tools. Plus, this is my first non VW vehicle so I'm still leaning what tools I need for what and I didn't realize it was a different size from the ones holding the seats in :crazy. So I'll get to the bumper another time. Also got my package from Buggman this weekend so I'll probably be tackling the cluster on Thursday :D. Pics when I do.

What center console is that? Sorta looks like the one I got out of the Explorer, but the black cup holder part looks different.

The shorty console cup holder sections came 2 different ways, 1 with the change holder in the rear behind the cup holder holes with the cup holder holes next to each other like the pic above, & like the one in my 2000 Ranger where the changer holder is in the front of the cup holder holes & the cup holder holes are one in back & one in front like the pic of my console below.

I got the bottom style with the "coins" to the front. I dig the other style though so I'll have to keep my peepers open for one.

So browsing ebay for that cup holder piece I like, I came across this interesting piece. Everything looks the same aside from the cup/coin holder. Looks like it has a retractable cover to hide the coinage. Anyone familiar with this piece?

Cup holder doesn't look "deep" enough for my coffee mug or tall water bottles, but I still like it. Looks less bulky.

That's different. No idea if it would fit or not, the back portion looks the same where it bolts to that huge aluminum bracket.

You do have the bracket don't you?
