You will find varying temperaments and thoughts on this subject probably almost as much as audio questions, maybe more. I very much enjoy the Flowmaster 40 on my truck with a turn-down just before/over the axle. According to a google opinion;

"40 Series – Aggressive. This is the standard that all chambered mufflers are compared to. The 40 Series is the original Flowmaster muffler and a benchmark for classic muscle car tone. ... Basically, they embody everything a muscle car should sound like."

PRO's - Its nothing expected in sound out of a small truck, it turns heads when I get on it, everyone knows when I come around the corner of their blocks, it sets off a few car alarms at a time when I want it to, and it sounds mean when I'm hitting the trails; especially if I am running it hard up a hill.

CON's - it turns heads when I get on it, everyone knows when I come around the corner of their blocks, and it sounds mean when I'm hitting the trails; especially if I am running it hard up a hill..

NO, that is not a typo.. For almost every reason why I like my exhaust I hate it equally due to the fact it really throws a monkey-wrench in all of things that would give me any advantages of stealth for any purpose.. Its not even the uniqueness of the weird topper that gives me away from being any sort of 'Gray-man' whatsoever; its the exhaust tone.

I have a design for an exhaust kit I would like to make that would also include an electronic solenoid to balance out power from overall excessive noise. Problem is I have to design it around the extended 34gal fuel tank, dual battery storage. Which all has to correlate around the 4x frame that'll be receiving boxing in and completely reworked MID travel front suspension and custom expeditionary spring pack kit using 64" springs and inverted brackets and such.. Then I get to reproduce this not only a second time but hopefully several times over.
Even the new rear bumper fits into all of this because the new exhaust will run dual output in a more modernized but unique to a Ranger platform in both function and aesthetics, let alone a 24yr old truck(s).

Gibson makes some nice stuff I believe in a dual or single output. Dynomax Ultraflo cans sound really good to, my extremely worked over 95' Escort made heads turn with a 60mm SS setup with a 4-2-1 header and near straight of line exhaust run.

The biggest thing is two fold; budget and expectations for that budget since that seems to be the boiling point for most. Doesn't matter how functional one may be over the other or sound even so much as long as it comes in or close to the budget someone preconceives a value for.

My old track car was a 92' Honda Civic Hatchie.. $2200 car... $6200 in suspension, $520 4-1 Race header, $2100 Full Titanium exhaust, 12:3.1 compression SCCA Track car.. the entire exhaust B-pipe, can, and over the axle complete W/4" tip (yes I needed all 4" of it.. LOL) weighed in at a whopping 8.2lbs total helping me shave off over 268lbs out of that car putting me in a sub 1800lb car class vs. 2094lbs OEM weight [both weights included full of fluids].

I spent a ridiculous amount of money to save weight, and have a sound (still streetable), and no lies.. some bragging rights that I spent some coin on a full titanium exhaust and went all out.

NOT at all a suggestion for your situation but weight, sound (especially if you make calls from a cell while driving) marks a point of function as well, and what you can afford or willing to save for would be my line of thinking. All more or less an experience shared more than a model suggestion for you like I said. If I really want something, I'll go out of my way to get it.

I have a JBA cat back single exhaust. It sounds a little louder then stock at idle, but sounds nice when I step on it.

I was thinking about making a sound bite of mine, would you be willing or able to do one similarly? I think I may use the go pro in multiple locations to get a really good sound clip.

I am really wanting to but hesitantly install my Hedman headers but I wanted to get them Hot Jet coated first before installing them to keep some heat under the hood down as well as maximize exhaust scavenging from them by keeping the heat inside as much as possible and flowing.. I really need to get a welder!

I do not have any idea of how to do it or think I have the ability to do a sound bite.

I have a Lincoln Weld Pak - 155 that runs on 220v that I have had for about 15 years that used flux core welding wire, but I converted it to gas. IMHO you get a better weld using gas.

If/when you buy a welder get one that has a lot of temp & wire speed settings.

Good to know, I have heard staying away from the newer digital ones and staying with the old school face ones is a good idea too

Anyone replaced just the rear muffler?

I'm going to try and replace the rear muffler with just straight pipe, keep the overall length the same - i have 3 pre-cats and 2 main cats, so i don't think it'll do too much.

Put a cherry bomb on it. It is basically strait through but it is classified as a muffler to avoid any LEO issues.

Seriously, it's so amazingly quiet - the only noise the whole thing makes at any time, is the engine as i took off the sound deadening opening.

I've actually considered throwing a stock exhaust back on.. just modifying the output location. Then i could sneak up on Prius's !!

I think to be that threatening I need to go from 33's to 35+.. lol

As sad as it would seem, a mid sized car that nets an avg of 560 MPG. I'd almost buy one for a city runner. I used to sell the stupid things. surprisingly a reverse cloverleaf on ramp I can get one of those fuckers in a full slide !!
