What sounds good to me, may not sound good to you.
I am a huge proponent of components and round drivers (no 5x7/6x8/6x9s). I also like Infinity for better than stock, but not all out (good mid grade line - where it sounds like you are looking at).. Rockford Fosgate has always been one of the brands I liked, but not sure why. Cant say Ive actually heard any of there speakers in person installed before.
For short term use, I got the cheapest HU and Speakers I could find. Boss 616UAB HU and Boss CH5530 5.25 3-ways. Swap Meet find. $20 all in! Im hoping these will get me by until I can properly do an audio system in the Ranger.
Having said all of that, I typically am a bit of an audiophole. It all started when I was able to afford to pay for a $15k system. All ARC Audio, metered at 143db clean. (The looks from bumping Mario Kart Wii - And NEVER play Mario Kart Wii or any other video game for that matter while driving) I still have the amps and active crossover from that install and may be using them in the future...
