Puddle lights were a marketing feature designed for entering or exiting a vehicle, it was something of a luxury minded thought seen on highline cars and of course in an effort to add value through a feature, Ford said hell yea we need those on our cars! As you indicated, something you don't need or want now and could likely live without. I didnt really think about it until now but. 2003-2016 Ford Explorers came with Puddle lamp options, and some of those year Mirrors may fir with modification but I think the aftermarket options might do you better and be less waste of money.
