Before you even think about getting or using a kayak (or any other water craft) think about getting some professional training and certainly before going on water you are not recently familiar with, talk to people (lifeguards if available) who know the area and can advise you on the safe places to go. I live close by the river Thames estuary and have done all my life - our rescue boats and hovercraft have a full time job saving the lives of people who think they can just go wherever they want on sailboards, canoes and dinghys, even on foot, and then get surprised by fast flowing tides that cut them off or sweep them out to sea!
