Pardon me if this is in the wrong place, I'm a newbie here.  Hopefully someone can help. 

I have no resistance in the clutch pedal sometimes.  Usually after an hour or so on the highway.  After a half hour or so on the side of the road it comes back, once I was able to pump the pedal like crazy and get some pressure back in it.  Around town it seems to be fine, and there is no fluid loss.  The shop wants to put in a new clutch, they say I need both the master and slave.  Of course then the tranny has to come out . . . can't I just replace the Master?

Sounds like one or the other is failing, probably not both. I'm not a clutch guy, Welcome to F-R but we can help you out better if you let us know the model year and motor in your ranger.

Then when you get it fixed we need pics :)

Sounds like either the clutch master or slave cylinder is going bad.

It's a crap shoot as to which of the two components has failed, but realizing that the tranny comes out to replace the slave, you might replace the master by yourself. 50-50 chance of being right.
